Women active in Indiana’s ratification of the Federal Equal Rights Amendment and Indiana women’s organizations were fearful that the materials documenting their contributions to the greater women’s movement would be lost and, therefore, founded the Indiana Women’s History Archives (now Association) in 1984. A study, supported by a grant from the Lilly Foundation, confirmed that their fears were well founded. Documentary materials were stored in garages, basements, attics or already discarded for lack of a safe repository. The Indiana Women’s History Association (IWHA) partnered with the Indiana Historical Society (IHS) to add many of these and other women’s organizational records to its Women’s Collection. A traveling exhibit was developed with IHS to encourage identification, collection and preservation of Indiana’s women’s history. Celebrations of “History for the Rest of Us”in 2000;the Sesquicentennial of Indiana’s first women’s rights convention in 2001;the production of the award winning documentary,“For the Sport of It,”a joint project with NCAA regarding the history and gains of Title IX,and many other activities followed, including national recognition through an organizational award from the AALSH. Please consider joining IWHA to further this great tradition and forge plans for its future. Send your (tax deductible) membership contribution to IWHA,P.O. Box 1885,Indianapolis,IN 46206-1885. Please make your check payable to IWHA.
